Batterij Bamburg - Monument

The Batterij Bamburg in Westende is a special bunker site from the Second World War, located in the peaceful Schuddebeurze nature area. Here, nature, landscape and wartime history come together in an impressive way.
What can you expect at Batterij Bamburg?
- Unique bunker site: Batterij Bamburg was built between 1942 and 1944 by the German occupier as part of the Atlantic Wall. The position lay around 3 kilometres inland and served, among other things, to defend the harbour of Nieuwpoort and the IJzermonding.
- Well-preserved heritage: The site is regarded as one of the most complete and best-preserved field batteries on the Belgian coast. Among the grasslands, bunkers, trenches, gun positions and ammunition rooms can still be recognised.
- Viewing platform on a bunker: A viewing platform has been built on top of an old command bunker. From a height of around 5 metres, you have a lovely view over the bunker site, the dune grasslands and the open landscape of Schuddebeurze.
Schuddebeurze nature area: The bunkers lie in the middle of a protected nature area with old grasslands, pools, dune grassland and historic farms. The concrete wartime bunkers form a striking contrast with the green and peaceful surroundings.
- Bats and quiet nature: Some bunkers now provide shelter for bats. This makes the site not only historically interesting, but also valuable for nature.
