De IJzermonding - Nature
In Nieuwpoort, just 4 km from the town centre, lies the nature reserve De IJzermonding, a unique area where fresh and saltwater meet. This beautiful nature reserve, with its rich variety of fauna and flora, offers a special experience for nature lovers.
What Can You Expect at De IJzermonding?
- Unique Biotope: Discover the unique environment where the IJzer, the only Belgian river that flows directly into the North Sea, creates a rare mix of fresh and saltwater. This interaction creates a special biotope with salt-loving plants such as samphire and sea plantain.
- Rich Fauna and Flora: The nature reserve is home to a diversity of soil animals like worms, snails, algae, shells, and crustaceans. Migratory birds and waders rest here, and the area is also a favourite spot for seals.
- Walking and Cycling Paths: An extensive network of walking and cycling paths allows you to explore the area in an active way. Along the way, information panels provide insights into the rich nature and importance of this area.
- Educational Experiences: Since July 2018, there has been a new trail for both adults and children. Mascot Scotty takes children on an adventure and teaches them all about the inhabitants of De IJzermonding through a fun and interactive game.
- Beach Reserve: Next to the nature reserve is a beach reserve where birds and seals can rest undisturbed. This part of the beach can be seen from the wooden bridge near the iconic lighthouse but must not be entered.
- Bird Watching Hides: The bird watching hides offer a beautiful view over the mudflats and salt marshes, where you can observe many birds and enjoy the serene nature.
